Deposition Definition

From a legal point of view, a deposition definition is the testimony of one or both parties, eyewitnesses or anyone else pertinent to the case at hand answering questions, under oath, being either recorded by a device, in the presence of a court reporter or both.

In the deposition definition the deposition occurs before the trial and the testimonies collected can be used as evidence in the court.  Discoveries are used to help find more information if not outright forfeit or acquittal causes from evidence discovered at a deposition.

Other documents, photos and other attachments can be requested at a deposition. These documents will be marked and numbered and added as exhibits for the deposition. All parties will be given copies of the exhibits.

abraham-lincoln-deposition

When a deposition is finished, all parties will concur meaning that they all agree that all the documents and exhibits are true and correct.  The agreement that all the documents and exhibits for a deposition by two opposing attorneys are seen to be true and correct is the text book example for a concur definition . The two attorneys agree, shake on it, cut a deal that all documents are seen as to be true and correct, and generally make a lot of money. They, in short, concur.

The deposition definition is much more complex and complicated than the one mentioned here, however, this definition should give you enough a general idea as to what deposition means.

Interesting Facts About Hurricanes

There are many interesting facts about hurricanes many of which are not commonly known. For instance the scientific name for a hurricane is a tropical cyclone. The term hurricane is only used for tropical cyclones that form in the Atlantic Ocean, whereas in the Pacific Ocean they are called typhoons and in the Indian Ocean they are called cyclones.

Other interesting facts about hurricanes include that slow moving hurricanes are more dangerous than quick moving hurricanes. Slower hurricanes usually produce more rainfall and more physical damage. The largest hurricane known to man is also the oldest hurricane which is on Jupiter. We see this hurricane as a red spot on Jupiter; it is larger than earth and existed for over 300 years.  Hurricanes usually produce tornadoes which precede the actual hurricane. These tornadoes are usually not as powerful as standalone tornadoes and are sometimes called hurricane tornadoes.

Hurricanes are the only weather disturbance which we name. Naming conventions for hurricanes were formalized in 1953 when 6 lists of female names were used. In 1979 male names were added to the lists. If a hurricane is particularly devastating that name will be removed from the list and retired. The first instance of naming tropical cyclones was an Australian in the early 1900s.

Hurricanes rotate in counter-clockwise directions only. In addition, the most sever part of a hurricane is the hurricane wall at the eye of the hurricane in the right hand area, after the eye or back half of the hurricane according to its direction. The eye of the hurricane is calm and you can sometimes see blue skies in the eye. From this calm, the full impact of the hurricane hits the affected area with the highest wind speeds and slowly weakens as it passes by.

interesting hurricane facts

Another interesting fact about hurricanes is that there is no real ‘season’ for a hurricane. Hurricanes can happen any time of year, however, because the conditions that are required for a hurricane to form are abundant during the summer and early autumn seasons this time period is considered hurricane season.

The most hurricanes reported in a single year were 11 in 1995 and the first hurricane to cost over $1 billion in damages was category 3 hurricane Betsy in 1965.

These are just a few interesting facts about hurricanes. If you would like to read more interesting facts about hurricanes be sure to read the article Hurricane || Typhoon = Tropical Cyclone.

Morphology Definition

A basic morphology definition is the study of the rules as to how we form words as well as the internal structure of words of any language. The word morphology literally means the science of forms and in this case the science of word forms.

Morphology def

Understanding that in English we add a syllable to the past tense of regular verbs that end in a ‘t’ or ‘d’ sound would be considered to be part of the morphology definition. The past tense of decide would have one syllable added as in de-cid-ed whereas the past tense of the regular verb play would not; played.

The study of morphemes would also be considered part of the field of morphology. How we add ‘s’ to words, whether verbs or nouns, whether singular or plural, whether singular or plural verbs is considered to fall in the realm of the morphology definition.

How and why we add suffixes and prefixes, -ing, regular and irregular verbs, words that end with this letter or that letter will have particular characteristics such as words that end with ‘us’ and how we spell and pronounce them in their singular forms all fall in the realm of the morphology definition.

When we study which syllable we stress whether it is a noun, adjective or verb and whether it is 2,3 or more syllables is morphology. Our understanding that the same words will be pronounced differently by an American or a British citizen is morphology or that American’s say truck whereas British say lorry is morphology.

Morphology theory

Morphology is vast and dynamic. Morphology is not static as the English language and most languages are not static. Words change meanings and usage over the decades. Some words disappear and new words appear. Words are spelled differently and letters change. Learned or learnt? Burned or burnt or both?

As the world increases in population and business becomes paramount to a much larger population than ever before, we see many nations’ citizens learning the current international language of business, English. Regional variations of English are appearing and becoming popular and accepted in today’s environment of international cooperation.

Even though the morphology definition will remain somewhat static, the scope that it entails will continue to grow and change. To define morphology will look differently in 20 years from now but it will still be the science of word forms.

How to learn Spoken English

If you want to know how to learn spoken English, you incorporate spoken English into your routine you have to learn English. Your first lessons should be pronunciation or how words are spoken. Thereafter, all your lessons should have a pronunciation component incorporated in them.

If you don’t learn how to pronounce words first then you will increase the probability of forming bad pronunciation habits. The word computer has three syllables; com, pu and ter. English being a stressed language means that one of these three syllables is stressed more than the other two.

In Thailand, many students pronounce computer incorrectly. The third syllable, incorrectly, is stressed; com-pu-TER. When these students pronounce computer, they sound like they have a French accent. The important thing to take from this is that they sound like they have an accent. They do not sound like native English speakers. Native English speakers do not say com-pu-TER, they say com-PU-ter.

When we say, “He has an accent,” we are saying, he is accentuating or stressing the word syllables differently than a native speaker does. If you want to know how to learn spoken English, you need to understand which syllable of a word is stressed.

There are word stress rules you should learn. Don’t use word stress rules as the final word on any pronunciation because there are many exceptions to rules in English but they should be learned in order to understand that there are rules. In addition, English is a dynamic language and is constantly changing. As well, American and British English pronunciation differs dramatically. In American English, they say ad-ver-TISE-ment and in British English, they say ad-VERT-is-ment.

One rule is there is only one stress for any word. There is what is called secondary stresses, but secondary stresses are less stressed than the primary stress. The word pronunciation has a primary stress and a secondary stress. The syllables are pro, nun, ci, a and tion. The primary stress is ‘a’ and the secondary is ‘nun’; pro-nun-ci-A-tion. It is more important to know the primary stress than the secondary. If the main primary stress is wrong, then you have already have failed in pronouncing the word correctly.

Word stress

Another word stress rule is only vowels are stressed and not consonants. In the word computer, we stress PU, but in reality we are stressing the ‘U’, if you were to say, com-pU-ter you would sound more ‘native’.

Two syllable nouns usually have the first syllable stressed. Two syllable verbs usually have the second syllable stressed.

PRE-sent (noun) and pre-SENT (verb)

CON-tent (noun) and con-TENT (verb)

He will present her with a present for her birthday.

He will pre-SENT her with a PRE-sent for her birthday.

He was content with the web content.

He was con-TENT with the web CON-tent.

Two syllable adjectives are usually stressed on the first syllable. He is a happy person. He is a HAP-py person.

 Word Stress

Words that end in ‘ic’ or ‘tion’ or ‘sion’ have the accent on the syllable before the ‘ic’, ‘tion’ or ‘sion’. We can see from the earlier example; pronunciation, that the ‘A’ or the syllable prior or before the ‘tion’ is the stressed syllable, pro-nun-ci-A-tion.

Words that end in ‘cy’, ‘ty’, ‘phy’, ‘gy’ or ‘al’ are not accented on the previous syllable but two syllables prior or before (third last syllable) the ‘cy’, ‘ty’, ‘phy’, ‘gy’ or ‘al’.

Pho-TO-gra-phy, na-tion-AL-i-ty, e-lec-TRI-ci-ty, e-LEC-tric-al and so-ci-OL-o-gy all follow the above rules.

For compound words we stress the first syllable, for compound verbs we stress the first syllable of the second word as we do for compound adjectives. Some examples are WA-ter-mel-lon, Un-der-STAND-ing and ov-er-FLOW-ing respectively.

Don’t work if you can’t speak fast, it’s better to speak properly more than speaking quickly. It is better to speak slowly and worry about fluency later.

If you can remember those rules you won’t necessarily become a native English speaker, but how to learn spoken English will be easier and make a bit more sense for you. Once you understand stress and pronunciation you can focus on vocabulary like know synonyms or an antonym for benefit.
